Games Industry spoke with Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan. IN the conversation touched on the PS Plus subscription service, which on the PS5 users access to many PS4 hits as part of the PlayStation Plus Collection. In such an initiative by Sony, everyone saw an attempt to compete with the Xbox Game Pass, but this is not the case. The Japanese company is not going to provide access to its new exclusives by subscription.
Jim Ryan's statement reads: "We've talked about this before. We are not going to add [own] new releases to the subscription model. These games cost millions of dollars, over $100 million goes into development. Such a strategy does not seem viable to us.”
The CEO then explained that future titles from Sony Interactive Entertainment's in-house studios would not make sense under a Game Pass-like subscription: “We want to make games bigger and better, and also hope to make them long-lived at some stage. So putting them into the subscription model from day one doesn't make any sense to us. For other [companies] in a similar position, it might work, but for us it doesn't. We want to expand and develop our own ecosystem, and including new games in a subscription model is not part of [Sony's] current strategy."
As a reminder, the PlayStation Plus Collection includes 18 games, including Sony exclusives - , , and others.
