Facebook and Sony announced on Thursday that they will be skipping the GDC 2020 game developer conference in San Francisco next month due to ongoing concerns about the potential for the coronavirus epidemic to spread further.

Facebook typically uses the annual GDC to announce its VR division Oculus and other gaming innovations. A spokesperson for the company said that Facebook will host all scheduled presentations, but will do so digitally. Company reported, which plans to return to GDC in 2021.

Facebook will also not send employees to the PAX East 2020 gaming and interactive entertainment show, which is due to take place in Boston from February 27 to March 1.

Sony, too, issued a statement on Thursday indicating that opting out of GDC 2020 is β€œthe best option as the situation around the virus and global travel restrictions changes every day.”

β€œWe are disappointed with the cancellation of our participation, but the health and safety of our global workforce is our primary concern,” the company said in a press release.

It should be noted that the organizers of the GDC do not abandon their intentions to hold the event.
