FCC: Huawei and ZTE are a threat to national security

Federal Communications Commission (FCC - Federal Communications Commission) USA announced companies Huawei and ZTE "threats to national security" by officially banning US corporations from using federal funds to purchase and install equipment from Chinese telecommunications giants.

FCC: Huawei and ZTE are a threat to national security

The chairman of the American independent government agency, Ajit Pai, said that the basis of this decision lay down "strong evidence". Federal agencies and lawmakers have long said that because Huawei and ZTE are subject to Chinese law, they may be required to "cooperate with the country's intelligence agencies." Chinese tech companies have repeatedly rejected these claims.

β€œWe cannot and will not allow the Chinese Communist Party to exploit network vulnerabilities and compromise our critical communications infrastructure,” the regulator said in a separate statement. IN the order, released by the FCC on Tuesday, states that the determination is effective immediately.

Last November, the US agency announced that companies deemed a threat to national security would not be eligible to receive any money from the US Special Fund (Universal Service Fund). The $8,5 billion fund is the primary vehicle for acquiring and subsidizing FCC equipment and services to establish (and improve) communications operations across the country.

Previously, Huawei and ZTE were already designated as security threats, but the formal process for assigning them this designation took several months, which eventually led to the above FCC statement. This declaration is the latest step in the commission's fight against Chinese technology suppliers. This puts many telcos working to expand their 5G coverage into a stalemate: Huawei and ZTE are leaders in this field, well ahead of their US competitors.

Representatives of Huawei and ZTE did not comment on this situation.
