Fedora 33 Test Week - Btrfs

The Fedora Project has announced a "Test Week" (week of testing). The event will last from August 31 to September 07, 2020.

As part of the "Test Week", everyone is invited to test the next release of Fedora 33 and send the results to the developers of the distribution.

For testing, you need to install the system and perform several standard operations. Then you need to report the results through a special form.

According to wiki events, testing can be carried out in a virtual machine. Builds of x86 and aarch64 architectures are available for testing.

The main focus of the upcoming week is on Btrfs. In Fedora 33, this filesystem will be offered by the default installer. Previous versions of Fedora offered ext4 by default.

Among the features of Btrfs compared to ext4, it is worth noting the following:

  • copy-on-write. In the case of the ext4 filesystem, new data is written over old data. Btrfs allows you to write new data while leaving old data intact. This makes it possible to restore the system or data in the event of a failure.

  • snapshots. This technology allows you to take a "snapshot" of the file system for subsequent rollback of changes.

  • subvolumes. The Btrfs file system can be divided into so-called subvolumes (subvolumes).

  • Support for compression, which allows not only to compress files, but also to reduce the number of disk accesses.
