Phil Spencer: "Despite the impressive SSD and 3D sound in the PS5, we're even more confident about the XSX"

In IGN's latest Unlocked podcast, Ryan McCaffrey spoke with Xbox CEO Phil Spencer (Xbox Series X) about Microsoft's next generation console, the Xbox Series X, as well as key competitor Sony's PlayStation 5, among other things.

Mr. Spencer, for example, said that Microsoft intends to remain flexible in terms of Series X pricing, and that the company has a good plan for a console that is slated for release later this year.

“We will definitely keep our eyes peeled as we prepare for the launch of the new system,” the head emphasized. — We will monitor the actions of competitors, but we have a plan, and we are very confident in it. A long time ago you and I sat in a room and I said I wanted to win, and for years you reminded me of these words with the question: “Where is this winning plan?” I believe that we now have a plan that will allow us to win.

During the podcast, Microsoft's EVP of Video Games not only talked about the cost of the Xbox Series X, but also mentioned Sony's PS5 competitor. When asked about Spencer's reaction to the PS5 presentation by Mark Cerny last month, the head of Xbox replied that while the SSD technology and 3D audio in the upcoming Sony console are impressive, his team is now even more confident in the right those choices that were made when creating the Xbox Series X.

“I felt how well all the components of the Series X line up in a common system,” said Mr. Spencer. “I think Mark and his team did a really good job with the audio processing they were talking about, and their SSD technology is impressive, we love it. We saw the work they did. But we took a holistic view of our platform, from CPU, GPU, and RAM to throughput, speed, latency, and backwards compatibility. It took us years to get to this point... So I definitely have respect for any team that launches a platform - this task requires a lot of work."

And then the Xbox executive continued: “But I will say that when we finally saw Sony publicly talk about their system, I felt even more confident about the decisions we made when creating our platform. And I kind of expected it to be. I have complete confidence in the hardware design team that worked on the Xbox One S and Xbox One X. Given time and purpose, they are capable of creating great, end-to-end systems.”
