Funding from the D Language Development Fund: New platforms and new grants…

When I first announced the creation HR fund here, on the blog in April, the D Language Development Foundation team was in talks to hire one or more people to flesh out the specification and implementation of shared (an attribute of inter-thread communication). This kind of work requires very specific skills that only a few people in Circle D have. So far, we have not been able to find any of them who have enough time. Meanwhile, the HR Fund is waiting to be used.

Mobile programming with LDC

A few weeks ago, Ethan Watson wrote a post on the D forums about "DMD or LDC on mobile devices". This topic, followed by correspondence with Ethan and a few others, provided a great opportunity to start using the HR fund. Given that LDC already has ARM backing and DMD does not yet, it is more practical to fund LDC activities than DMD.

As Adam Ruppe posted on the forum, he is currently under contract to complete the ongoing Android support work for LDC. By the end of the work on the program, anyone will be able to create an application D for Android and distribute it through the Play Store.

The history with iOS, unfortunately, has not advanced enough yet. We had the perfect candidate in mind and wanted to get started, but unfortunately he couldn't take the break he needed to complete the task. We asked around, looked for someone else with the same skills to take on this task, but found nothing. So now we're talking to society as a whole. But with changes...

New grants for completing tasks

Back in August, I announced that we launched a new Bug Bounty system - grants for errors. The term "error" may have been too strict, so I renamed the menu to Target Grants. And to date, the D Foundation has awarded three new grants: two to address the Bugzilla issues and one to the aforementioned LDC project.

Funding from the D Language Development Fund: New platforms and new grants…

The D Language Foundation has donated $3000 to incentivize support for iOS and iPadOS at LDC. We encourage everyone who is interested in this task to be completed to make a donation to increase the reward amount.

This is not an ordinary award, as the money will only be paid as a result of contract work. Thus, the money for the goals comes from the HR fund. Therefore, if you are interested in receiving this award, click on the picture above and read the description. We want to complete this as soon as possible, otherwise we would have to wait until our initial candidate becomes available. Therefore, if you have the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the work, do not hesitate to contact us.

The Development Fund provided two Bugzilla awards (from the general fund) at $50 each: one for #18472 (betterC: can't use format at compile time) and another by #18062 (ddoc: .html files must preserve package hierarchy). Follow these links to increase your reward, or visit Bugzilla#18472 or Bugzilla#18062to learn more about the errors and start fixing them.

I'd like to thank the members of the dlang-jp community for bringing these bugs to our attention. I recently met three of them in Tokyo with Átila Neves. In addition to having a great time in Asakusa, we had a good chat about D and the Japanese D community. I look forward to the next opportunity to see them.

In the coming weeks, we will be able to receive more rewards from Bugzilla. I will deal with old #dbugfix issues that are still open. If you encounter an error that is of particular concern to you, please consider pay for it yourself. You can also post a link to it on Twitter with the #dbugfix hashtag, and we will consider the possibility of paying a bonus with the Fund's funds.

State of the HR fund

Currently, the HR-Fund has funds in the amount of $16345. We're going to give some of it to Adam for his work on Android and (hopefully) more to whoever takes on the task of iOS. We are currently considering other possibilities. We are still dreaming of financing large-scale works, so we need to continue to increase this fund.
You can help us by donating directly to the HR fund, or by taking advantage of our special $60 campaign: donate $60 to the HR fund and get a DConf 2019 T-shirt. We still have a few T-shirts scattered around the world, so please buy them from someone!

These plugins ensure that every time you visit amazon.com, you will be sent to smile.amazon.com to support your chosen charity. If it's the D Language Development Fund, then we receive 0,5% of every purchase you make (sorry, the D Language Development Fund is only available as a charity through the .com domain).

You can now also support the D Language Foundation through the Amazon Shopping App for Android. Visit page AmazonSmile Mobileto learn how.
