AMD's new flagship processor, the 12-core Ryzen 9 3900X, is in short supply just two weeks after its release. And the sellers, who still had the new AMD flagship, began to sell it at greatly inflated prices. Actually, this is what always happens during a shortage.
The PCWorld resource reports that most of the major US online stores, including Amazon, Newegg, Best Bay and others, do not have new processors in stock. Only Micro Center offers to place an order, but does not specify the very availability of the Ryzen 9 3900X and the delivery time. You can easily buy a novelty only on eBay, however, for $740. That is almost 50% more expensive than the recommended price, which for the Ryzen 9 3900X is $499.
A similar situation has developed not only for the flagship. The lower octa-core Ryzen 7 3800X is also no longer available from many major US retailers. Again, only Micro Center reports availability, but only in physical stores. And on eBay, the Ryzen 7 3800X has skyrocketed from a recommended $399 to a more hefty $479.
AMD itself comments on the current situation as follows: βWe provide significant volumes of products to our partners in the retail and online trade. We're excited to see the overwhelmingly positive response to Ryzen 3000-series desktop processors and Radeon RX 5700-series graphics cards. AMD is working quickly to restock merchants worldwide after significant demand.β
Let's hope that AMD will soon cope with these difficulties, and everyone will be able to buy any Ryzen 3000 series. Note also that the shortage overtook only the older AMD Ryzen 3000 series processors, while buying cheaper and not so fast AMD processors is not difficult. For example, the eight-core Ryzen 7 3700X can be bought on Amazon and Newegg for a suggested price of $329.
