Flathub rolls out support for donations and paid apps

Flathub, a web directory and repository of self-contained Flatpak packages, has begun testing changes it has collaborated with Codethink to provide core developers and maintainers of Flathub-distributed applications with the ability to monetize their work. Developed features can be evaluated on the test site beta.flathub.org.

Of the changes already available for testing, mention is made of support for connecting developers to Flathub using GitHub, GitLab and Google accounts, as well as a donation mechanism using translations through the Stripe system. In addition to accepting donations, work is underway to create an infrastructure for selling packages and linking tags to verified applications.

Of the changes, there is also a general modernization of the design of the Flathub website and the processing of the server backend, carried out to ensure the installation of paid applications and verification of sources. Verification implies confirmation by developers of their connection with the main projects by checking the possibility of their access to repositories on GitHub or GitLab,

It is understood that only members of the main projects with access to the repositories will be able to place donation buttons and sell ready-made packages. Such a restriction will protect users from scammers and third parties who have nothing to do with development, but who are trying to cash in on selling assemblies of popular open source programs.
