The Free Software Foundation has unveiled a new device that has received the "Respect Your Freedom" certification, which certifies that the device complies with user privacy and freedom requirements and gives the right to use a special logo in related materials, emphasizing giving the user full control over the device. Certified for the Wireless-N Mini Router v3 (TPE-R1300) distributed by ThinkPenguin.
The TPE-R1300 is an upgrade of the 2016 and 2019 certified TPE-R1100 and TPE-R1200 models. The new model is equipped with Qualcomm QCA9531 (650MHz) SoC, provides 128MB RAM, 16MB Nor flash + 128MB Nand flash, comes with two external RP-SMA antennas, Wan, LAN, USB2.0, MicroUSB and UART ports.
The router comes with a U-Boot bootloader and firmware based on the completely free libreCMC distribution, which is a fork of OpenWRT that ships with the Linux-libre kernel and is stripped of binary drivers, firmware, and applications distributed under a non-free license. The distribution kit provides built-in tools for working through VPN and anonymizing traffic using the Tor network.
To be certified by the Free Software Foundation, a product must meet the following requirements:
- supply of free drivers and firmware;
- all software supplied with the device must be free;
- no DRM restrictions;
- the ability to fully control the operation of the device;
- support for firmware replacement;
- support for completely free GNU/Linux distributions;
- the use of patent-free formats and software components;
- availability of free documentation.
