Free Software Foundation Certified ThinkPenguin TPE-R1400 VPN Router

The Free Software Foundation has unveiled a new device that has received the "Respect Your Freedom" certification, which certifies that the device complies with user privacy and freedom requirements and gives the right to use a special logo in related materials, emphasizing giving the user full control over the device. The certificate was issued to the Gigabit Mini VPN Router (TPE-R1400) distributed by ThinkPenguin.

The TPE-R1400 router is built on the Rockchip RK3328 SoC with a quad-core Cortex-A53 (1.4Ghz) CPU, comes with 1 GB of RAM, is equipped with two Gigabit Ethernet interfaces (1 WAN and 1 LAN), a USB 2.0 port and a Micro-SD slot (stuffing completely similar to the NanoPi R2S device supplied with FriendlyWrt/OpenWrt). The device does not have Wi-Fi, for organizing wireless access TPE-R1400 is recommended to be used in combination with a TPE-R1300 wireless router from the same manufacturer, which was previously certified by the Free Software Foundation.

The router comes with a U-Boot bootloader and firmware based on the completely free libreCMC distribution, which is a fork of OpenWRT that ships with the Linux-libre kernel and is stripped of binary drivers, firmware, and applications distributed under a non-free license. The distribution provides built-in tools for organizing the operation of systems on a local network via VPN and supports connection to VPN based on OpenVPN and WireGuard, as well as connection through VPN providers such as Mullvad, AirVPN, OVPN, njalla, PureVPN, HideMyAss, IPredator and NordVPN.
