And Ford claims that the investigation has nothing to do with the use of "neutralization devices" or software designed to fool regulators when conducting emissions tests, as was the case with Volkswagen's dieselgate.

β€œThe Department of Justice contacted us earlier this month to inform us of the opening of a criminal investigation,” the company said Friday in a letter to The Verge. Ford said it was fully cooperating with the regulator and promised to update the regulator on the results of its own investigation into its emissions testing practices, which began in February after employees warned of potential challenges to match the controls.

Daimler (Mercedes-Benz's parent company) and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles are also under criminal investigation for emissions, according to press reports. Like Volkswagen, they are said to have also used "catalysts" to "improve" the emissions performance of some diesel car models when tested by regulators.
