Photo of the Day: Coffee-like spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major

The US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released a stunning image of a barred spiral galaxy in the constellation Ursa Major.

The object is designated NGC 3895. Its image was taken from the orbiting Hubble Observatory (NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope), which celebrated its thirtieth anniversary this year.

Barred spiral galaxies are quite numerous: it is estimated that approximately two-thirds of all spiral galaxies are barred. In such objects, the spiral arms begin at the ends of the bar, whereas in ordinary spiral galaxies they extend directly from the core.

The published photograph clearly shows the structure of the galaxy NGC 3895. The twisting spiral branches and color scheme evoke associations with a cup of coffee.

Let us add that the captured galaxy was discovered by the British astronomer of German origin, William Herschel, back in 1790.
