Photo of the day: the majestic Milky Way

The European Southern Observatory (ESO, European Southern Observatory) has presented a magnificent image of our Milky Way galaxy.

The image was taken in the depths of the Chilean Atacama Desert, near the ESO Paranal Observatory. The night sky in this secluded corner of the Chilean Atacama Desert shows the smallest details of space.

In the presented image, in particular, the band of the Milky Way is captured. The photo shows countless stars, dark filaments of dust and glowing clouds of cosmic gas.

It should be noted that regions of star formation are recorded in the photograph. The high-energy radiation from the newborn stars ionizes the hydrogen in the gas clouds and causes them to glow reddish.

In addition, in the presented image, the Milky Way is literally spread over the Very Large Telescope (VLT) at the ESO Observatory. This system consists of four main telescopes and four small mobile auxiliary telescopes. The devices are capable of registering objects four billion times weaker than those visible to the naked eye.
