French regulator warns about the dangers of LED lamps for the eyes

The 'blue light' emitted by LED lighting can damage the eye's sensitive retina and disrupt natural sleep rhythms, the French Agency for Food, Environment, Health and Safety at Work (ANSES), which assesses risks, said this week. for health in food, environment and work.

The results of the new study confirm earlier concerns that "exposure to intense and powerful [LED] light is 'phototoxic' and can lead to irreversible loss of retinal cells and reduced visual acuity," ANSES warned in a released statement.

In a 400-page report, the agency recommended a review of exposure limits for LED light exposure, even if such levels are rarely seen in the home or workplace.

The report points out the difference between exposure to high-intensity LED light and systematic exposure to lower-intensity light sources.

According to the agency's findings, even less hazardous, systematic exposure to lower-intensity light sources can "accelerate the aging of retinal tissue, contributing to decreased visual acuity and some degenerative diseases such as age-related macular degeneration."

As Francine Behar-Cohen, an ophthalmologist and head of the expert group that conducted the study, told reporters, the LED screens of mobile phones, tablets and laptops do not pose a risk of eye damage because their brightness is very low compared to other types of lighting.

However, the use of such devices with a backlit screen, especially during the dark period of the day, can lead to disruption of biological rhythms, and, consequently, sleep disturbance.
