After only half a year of development, the next version of FreeOrion, a free space 4X parallel-turn-based strategy game based on the Master of Orion game series, has been released.
It was supposed to be a "fast" (by the team's standards) release with the main goal of changing the dependency from Python2 to Python3 (which was done very late). Thus, although the Python version change was not the only major change, the 0.4.10 release can be considered a "Python 3" release.
Key changes:
- The game now supports Python 3.5+. The Python 2 dependency has been removed.
- The Arc Disruptor ship cannon has been added with the appropriate research, which can be useful for races with poor piloting, against a large number of weak targets, or against ships without shields.
- The possible targets for each weapon have been limited to make different types of weapons more useful in different situations.
- Work was done on the balance of fighters, and a type of heavy bombers was added.
- Added happiness requirement for planetary resource growth.
- Added placement of starting planets based on teams in multiplayer.
- Individual bonuses from research and traits have been changed to make population less important and smooth out the snowball effect of empire growth.
