FuryBSD 12.1 - FreeBSD live images with KDE and Xfce

FuryBSD 12.1 - FreeBSD live images with KDE and Xfce

On March 19, the developers announced the release of FuryBSD 12.1 - "live" images of the FreeBSD OS with the KDE or Xfce desktop environments.

FreeBSD - a free operating system of the UNIX family, a descendant of AT & T Unix along the BSD line, created at the University of Berkeley.

FreeBSD is being developed as a complete operating system. The source code of the kernel, device drivers and basic user programs (the so-called userland), such as command shells, etc., is contained in one tree of the version control system (before May 31, 2008 - CVS, now - SVN). This distinguishes FreeBSD from GNU/Linux, another free UNIX-like operating system in which the kernel is developed by one group of developers, a set of user programs by others (for example, the GNU project). And numerous groups collect it all into a single whole and release it in the form of various Linux distributions.

FreeBSD is well established as a system for building intranet and Internet networks and servers. It provides reliable network services and efficient memory management.

Above FuryBSD works Joe Maloneyworking in the company iXsystems, responsible for the development of TrueOS and FreeNAS, but this project of his is positioned as free and has nothing to do with the company.

The release is based on FreeBSD 12.1, and the main changes include:

  • Xfce 4.14 and KDE 5.17
  • Added ability to install Nvidia drivers in fury-xorg-tool system configurator
  • Added a boot menu that allows you to change boot options or switch to single-user mode
  • dsbdriverd is now responsible for detecting hardware and finding the right drivers
  • xkbmap is now included in the base software and is responsible for working with keyboard layouts
