Spanish Football League fined for spying on fans

Spanish Football League LaLiga received fine for violating privacy laws by the government data protection agency. As it turned out, an application was created that formally tracked statistics. But at the same time, it spied on users, collecting data through a microphone and GPS module. This was necessary to find bars where they illegally broadcast football from β€œpirated” video streams.

LaLiga plans to appeal the decision. The league said the government agency "does not fully understand the app's technology." Another aspect is that about 10 million people installed the application, while the program openly requested access to the microphone and GPS.

This is far from the first and not the only such incident. Over the past few years, a number of programs and services have already been caught in illegal surveillance of users. These included both Facebook and solutions from Yandex and Amazon. In addition, now all current versions of voice assistants, both in smartphones and in smart speakers, listen to the world around them, reacting to a code phrase. And similar systems are built into smart TVs and other devices.

In general, the situation with various data leaks through voice assistants and various spyware continues to remain difficult. According to many experts, such systems are β€œleaky” and do not provide the required level of protection. And this does not include the fact that corporations can simply collect information secretly.
