Recently, cyberpunk is gaining popularity again. The fact that this happened at the same time as CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077, in the case of Astral Chain, is pure coincidence. So said the director of the project Takahisa Taura (Takahisa Taura) in an interview with Polygon. “I have to start by saying that we didn’t start working on Astral Chain with cyberpunk in mind,” Taura said. “We were actually trying to make fantasy where you would use magic.”

During the development process, Platinum Games and Nintendo came to the conclusion that there are already many games in the fantasy setting. “We wanted Astral Chain to stand out from other games,” Taura said.

As Astral Chain transitioned from fantasy to cyberpunk, Taura used works such as Ghost in the Shell and Appleseed as inspiration. In addition, character designer Masakazu Katsura is the author of a sci-fi manga called Zetman.

Recall that Takahisa Taura is the lead designer Never: Automata. According to him, Astral Chain's structure is somewhere between the linearity of Bayonetta and the open areas of NieR: Automata. Players can progress through the story, but also return to previously completed levels.

Astral Chain will be available exclusively for Nintendo Switch on August 30th.
