Where they teach to teach (not only at the Pedagogical Institute)

Who will benefit from this article:

  • students who decide to earn extra money by tutoring
  • graduate students or specialists who were given a seminar group
  • older siblings when younger ones ask to learn how to program (cross-stitch, speak Chinese, analyze markets, look for a job)

That is, to all those who need to be taught, explained, and who do not know what to grasp, how to plan lessons, what to tell.

Here you will find: links to training courses and books on pedagogy and education, to materials about where to read about learning objectives, about attracting attention and simplifying the material.

Where they teach to teach (not only at the Pedagogical Institute)

who am i and why i was looking for this informationI'm a programmer, but I've been teaching since the junior years of the institute. I taught mathematics to grades 8-9 of an evening school, taught seminars on python, and have been tutoring mathematics and programming for more than 5 years. However, despite my experience, I planned 1-2 lessons ahead and periodically saw an unasked question on the faces of the students “Why are we teaching this? Do we really need it?" As a result, I decided to find out what in general can be improved in teaching and how. I researched all the materials that my hands reached.

So. Found materials about pedagogy and education. These are books, courses on the course and paid online courses.

Books

“The art of teaching. How to make any learning fun and effective” Julie Dirksen.

If you don't have time to research and take courses, but want to improve your teaching skills, read this book. It in itself is a great example of how to make understandable, memorable learning. It tells about motivation, the work of memory, how to bring students to the result and motivate them.
The author says obvious things that everyone already knows from childhood. But then comes the realization that you do not use this information in any way and that with its help you can greatly improve students' understanding of the material.

“Don't growl at the dog! A book about training people, animals and yourself. Karen Pryor.

A book about the laws of human and animal behavior. I recommend reading not only teachers, but also owners of naughty animals, parents and leaders. It explains what feedback, positive reinforcements are and how they work. This book changed my understanding of punishment. Explained why the school teaches so badly. You will find 75 pages of information, 100+ (didn't count) examples on the use of various methods of training or persuasion. Not all information can be applied to training, some of the information is applicable only to training.

“Teacher skill. Proven Methods of Outstanding Educators” Doug Lemov.

If you teach younger students in a group, this is required reading for you. The book contains simple methods that will improve the results of your students. But if you teach adults in small groups, you will find little useful. In addition to tips on how to conduct the lesson itself, here you can find information on how to arrange desks, how to plan a lesson, how to greet students before a lesson.

“The art of explaining How to make sure that you are understood from a half-word.” Lee LeFever.

To get bits of useful information, you need to wade through piles of stories and advertising for the author's company. But useful information about organizing a presentation and designing explanations can be pulled out.

Courses on Coursera

You can get all the materials (including some tests) for free if you take the course.

how to listen to the course You can get materials for most courses for free on the course. There will be no access to graded courses, you will not receive a certificate, but all materials will be available to you.
To do this, click on the button to register for the course (namely, for the course, and not for the specialization! This is important):

Where they teach to teach (not only at the Pedagogical Institute)
At the bottom, after the offer to get the first 7 days for free, there will be a small inscription: "Take the course"

Where they teach to teach (not only at the Pedagogical Institute)
Press. Voila, you are amazing. You have access to almost all course materials

"university teaching" from the University of Hong Kong.

Lots of information and examples of how to use it. How to write assignments, give feedback, involve students in learning and much more. Examples of real lectures and seminars are shown, if you teach in large groups, I highly recommend watching. And here you will find many links to articles and studies of various methods.

“e-Learning Ecologies: Innovative Approaches to Teaching and Learning for the Digital Age”

The course tells how digital technologies can change the learning process for the better. There is little practical information, but it is very interesting to listen to - we are now living in a time of these changes and, perhaps, our children will learn according to new principles. This is not about how to improve teaching skills, but about how education can change now.

“Teaching Science at University” from the University of Zurich.

It looks interesting, but since there was already an overabundance of information, I did not look.

“Foundations of Teaching for Learning: Planning for Teaching and Learning”

Mastered only two lectures. I have never heard such a monotonous voice. Maybe the material is not bad, but it is very difficult to perceive. Can be used as an example of how not to do training. Recommended as a sleep aid.

Paid courses

You can find a lot of information you need to improve your teaching skills for free. It is worth thinking about paid courses if you want feedback, personal answers to questions.

“Fundamentals of Educational Design”

A two-month course with huge homework assignments. Worth going here for handouts and homework checks. On the course, you will draw up a program for your course, analyze the audience, set goals and think about how to motivate students. Get feedback on everything you do. The course has a specific format - many short videos from 1 to 20 minutes. For me, as a fan of two-hour lectures on 2x, it was hard. The course does not yet have a normal page, but it looks like there should be another launch.

Foxford

Here I also found a lot of materials for retraining teachers here. I can't say anything about them, I haven't listened to them.

Conclusion

In conclusion - my personal top materials:

  1. Read The Art of Teaching first. Minimum time spent, maximum benefit.
  2. If you are doing well with planning and learning goals, look at the course on the course from the University of Hong Kong. There you will find many tips that you can slowly put into practice.
  3. If you have a complete misunderstanding of what to do, from which end to grab on to improving the program, go to the Fundamentals of Educational Design course. Here they will put your brains in place and bring you by the hand from “ahhh, what and how to teach” to “wow. I have a great plan."

Submit interesting material, learn to teach students and enjoy life :)

PS I will be glad to useful links and materials :)

PPS Are the teaching notes interesting? Following the course, I can talk about audience analysis, setting learning goals, keeping students motivated. Should I take notes about training?
