On the ResetEra forum Sergey Mokhov answered to a number of questions from users. “I would personally choose an RPG,” he answered the question of what genre of game he would like to work on. — First of all, I'm a big RPG fan. I grew up playing Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, Fallout 2, Neverwinter Nights, and are regularly brought up in design meetings. But I also think Remedy would be really good at RPGs."

According to Mokhov, Remedy Entertainment's main skill is creating highly detailed worlds filled with compelling characters. “Think about it: we're in the business of creating detailed, weird worlds, filling them with compelling characters, and then telling a story through gameplay. It seems like a great starting point for an RPG,” he explained.

Remedy Entertainment does make interesting worlds and characters, but that's not enough for role-playing games that are famous for less linear storytelling and spacious open worlds. However, the studio's internal engine, Northlight, has evolved to support RPG technology.

“Northlight is an amazing engine when it comes to graphics capabilities,” Mokhov explained. “Control with RTX looks amazing and Northlight handles [the technology] with no problem. On the other hand, Northlight was made with linear games in mind. Level loading, lighting, AI processing is amazing if the game is linear and the level designers know what happens when. With an open environment, things get more complicated: you don't know where the player is going, what they see and what they do while they're there. So we had to work around a lot of those "engine habits" to get the game in a playable state. Of course, being an internal engine, it evolves with the game and by the end of development it gets much better, and even ready to support a less linear experience.
