General Motors and Philips to supply 73 ventilators

The US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on Wednesday awarded contracts worth about $1,1 billion to General Motors (GM) and Philips to create ventilators needed to treat critically ill patients with coronavirus infection.

According to the contract between HHS and GM, the automaker must supply 30 thousand ventilators worth $489 million. In turn, Philips from the Netherlands signed a contract with HHS for the production of 43 thousand ventilators for a total of $646,7 million, with an obligation to supply the first 2500 units by the end of May.

As part of the contract, GM will collaborate with medical device manufacturer Ventec Life Systems of Bothell, Washington. The first batch of ventilators in the amount of 6132 units should be delivered to them by June 1, and the entire volume under the contract - by the end of August. GM plans to begin production of ventilators at its Indiana plant next week.
