General Motors has joined the Eclipse Foundation and provided the uProtocol protocol

General Motors announced that it has joined the Eclipse Foundation, a non-profit organization that oversees the development of more than 400 open source projects and coordinates more than 20 thematic working groups. General Motors will participate in the Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) working group, which focuses on the development of automotive software stacks built using open source code and open specifications. The group includes developers of the GM Ultifi software platform, as well as representatives from Microsoft, Red Hat and several other automakers.

As part of its contribution to the common cause, General Motors has shared the uProtocol protocol with the community, aimed at accelerating the development of software supplied for various automotive devices. The protocol standardizes the means for organizing the interaction of automotive applications and services, is not limited to working only with General Motors products, and can also be used to organize the interaction of smartphones and third-party devices with automotive systems. The protocol will be supported in the Ultifi software platform, which is planned to be used in electric and internal combustion engine vehicles manufactured under the Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC brands.
