The German government is opposed to granting regulatory approval for the use of digital currency in the European Union, Der Spiegel magazine reported on Friday, citing a member of Germany's conservative CDU party, whose leader is Chancellor Angela Merkel.

CDU lawmaker Thomas Heilmann said in an interview with Spiegel that once a digital currency issuer starts to dominate the market, competitors will have difficulties, adding that coalition partners from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) are of the same opinion.

In turn, the French Ministry of Finance said on Friday that France and Germany have agreed to block the Libra cryptocurrency of the Facebook social network.

In a joint statement, the two governments emphasized that no private individual can lay claim to monetary power, which is an integral part of the sovereignty of nations.

Earlier, French Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire said that Facebook's new cryptocurrency should not operate in Europe due to concerns about sovereignty and the existence of ongoing financial risks.
