A new unstable version of GIMP has been released with significant changes.
Main innovations in this version:
- Minimal implementation of layer effects. Every color correction tool and filter applied is now saved as a layer attribute and can be re-edited. You can change the order in which filters are applied and temporarily disable or delete them.
- Automatic expansion of layers when drawing. The “Expand layers” option is available in all brush tools except the eraser. You can specify the size and fill method of the added area.
- Dialogue for personalizing the program upon first launch. You can select the interface theme, scale icons and interface text, disable grouping of tools, etc. The same dialog subsequently opens at startup on the “Create” page – there you can select recent images to open, create a new one, or open an arbitrary existing file.
- Improved support for color spaces other than sRGB. GIMP is slowly being rewritten to support color spaces other than RGB. The main changes in this version are “under the hood”. What is noticeable to users is that the program has learned to take measurements with an eyedropper in the native color space of the open image and show the corresponding color profile in dialogs.
- Leveling and uniform distribution of layers directly on the canvas, with dynamic guides, a la Figma, Inkscape, etc.
- Supports 16-/32-bit per channel RGBA DDS files, improvements in support for other formats (GIF, HEIF, EXR, PDF, PNG, PSD, PSP).
- Support for formats Farbfeld, Esm Software PIX, HEJ2.
- Interface theme system reorganized and significantly simplified.
The development of innovations for version 3.0 has now ceased. From now on, only RCs with bug fixes will be released.
The implementation of non-destructive editing will be further developed. In particular, it will be possible to create masks for layer effects.
