GitHub published statistics for 2021

GitHub has published a report analyzing statistics for 2021. Main trends:

  • In 2021, 61 million new repositories were created (in 2020 - 60 million, in 2019 - 44 million) and more than 170 million pull requests were sent. The total number of repositories reached 254 million.
  • The GitHub audience increased by 15 million users and reached 73 million (last year it was 56 million, the year before - 41 million, three years ago - 31 million). 3 million users connected (submitted changes) to open source software development for the first time (2020 million in 2.8).
  • Over the year, the number of GitHub users from Russia increased from 1.5 to 1.98 million, from Ukraine - from 646 to 815 thousand, from Belarus - from 168 to 214 thousand, from Kazakhstan - from 86 to 118 thousand. There are 13 million users in the USA, 7.5 million in China, 7.2 million in India, 2.3 million in Brazil, 2.2 million in the UK, 1.9 million in Germany, 1.5 million in France.
  • JavaScript remains the most popular language on GitHub. Python ranks second, Java third. Of the changes over the year, the only thing that stands out is the decrease in the popularity of the C language, which dropped to 9th place, losing 8th place to Shell.

  • 43.2% of active users are concentrated in North America (a year ago - 34%), in Europe - 33.5% (26.8%), in Asia - 15.7% (30.7%), in South America - 3.1% (4.9%), in Africa - 1%).
  • Developer productivity is starting to return to pre-COVID-19 levels, but only 10.7% of developers surveyed intend to return to working in offices (before the pandemic, 41% of those working in offices were), 47.6% plan to use hybrid schemes (some teams in the office, and some remotely), and 38% intend to continue working remotely (before the pandemic, 26.5% worked remotely).
  • 47.8% of developers write code for projects presented on GitHub while working in commercial companies, 13.5% - for fun participating in the life of open projects, 27.9% - as students.
