GitHub ends support for Subversion

GitHub has announced the decision to end support for the Subversion version control system. The ability to work with repositories hosted on GitHub through the interface of the centralized version control system Subversion (svn.github.com) will be disabled on January 8, 2024. There will be a series of test shutdowns before the official shutdown in late 2023, initially for a few hours and then for a full day. The desire to get rid of the costs of maintaining unnecessary services is mentioned as the reason for the termination of support for Subversion - the backend for working with Subversion is marked as having completed its task and is no longer in demand by developers.

Subversion support was added to GitHub in 2010 to ease the gradual migration to Git for users who are used to Subversion and continue to use generic SVN tools. In 2010, centralized systems were still widespread and Git's complete dominance was not apparent. Now the situation has changed and Git has come into use by about 94% of developers, while the popularity of Subversion has noticeably decreased. In its current form, Subversion is practically not used to access GitHub, the share of accesses through this system has decreased to 0.02% and there are only about 5000 repositories for which there is at least one SVN hit per month.
