GitHub wraps up development of Atom code editor

GitHub has announced the end of development of the Atom code editor. On December 15 this year, all projects in the Atom repositories will be converted to archive mode and become read-only. Instead of Atom, GitHub intends to focus on the more popular open source editor Microsoft Visual Studio Code (VS Code), which was created as an add-on to Atom, and GitHub Codespaces, a cloud-based development environment based on VS Code. The editor code is distributed under the MIT license and those wishing to continue development can use the opportunity to create a fork.

It is noted that despite the fact that the last release of Atom 1.60 was released in March, in recent years the development has been carried out according to the residual principle and significant new features have not been introduced into the project for a long time. Recently, new cloud-based code tools that can run in a browser have moved forward, and the number of users of a stand-alone Atom application has noticeably decreased. The Electron framework, based on developments created in Atom, has long been a separate project and will continue to develop without changes.
