At the request of the RIAA, the main youtube-dl source repository and all its forks on the github.com website have been blocked. All download links and documentation from the site https://youtube-dl.org give 404 error but page on pypi.org (packages for pip requiring Python to be installed) remains functional for now.
youtube-dl is a popular open-source program for downloading video and audio files from a number of popular sites: YouTube, Vimeo, DailyMotion, BandCamp, VK, Odnoklassniki, Yandex Music… The RIAA’s claims boil down to the presence of code blocks and tests that are clearly intended for downloading copyrighted video for viewing only.
Although all scripts remain available (with some effort), the main value of the project was to regularly monitor changes to the API of the supported sites and mechanisms for prompt correction of scripts when changes are made.
