The main supplier of electric bicycles to Europe is Taiwan, but conventional bicycles come from Cambodia

Eurostat gave out latest data on exports and imports from and to the EU of bicycles and electric bicycles (including pedal bicycles with an auxiliary motor of less than 250 W). Among other things, it turned out that Cambodia is the largest importer of bicycles to the EU countries, and Taiwan is the largest importer of electric bicycles.

In 2019, EU member states exported nearly one million different types of bicycles, worth a total of €368 million, to countries outside the EU. This is 24% more than in 2012. During the same period, EU Member States imported more than five million bicycles from non-EU countries, valued at €942 million. Compared to 2012, this is 12% less. The scale of import and export is still different, but the dynamics are in favor of the β€œEuropean assembly”.

In addition, 2019 electric bicycles were exported by EU member states in 191, worth €900 million. During the same time, imports of e-bikes into the EU from countries outside the European Union reached 272 units worth 703 million euros. Compared to 900, the number of e-bikes exported in 594 was almost twelve times higher, while the import of e-bikes only doubled. Dynamics again in favor of the EU economy.

The EU countries have two main areas for the sale of bicycles - the UK and Switzerland. 36% of total bicycle exports outside the EU went to the first country, and 18% went to the second. Then, in terms of the volume of purchases of this two-wheeled transport from Europe, there are Turkey (6%) and Uzbekistan with Norway (both 4% each). Switzerland and the UK were also the main importers of electric bikes from the EU, with 33% imported by Switzerland and 29% by the UK. They are followed by Norway (15%) and the USA (13%).

In terms of imports of two-wheeled products into the EU, in 2019 almost a quarter (24%) of bicycles were imported from Cambodia, 15% from Taiwan, 14% from China, 9% from the Philippines and 7% each from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Taiwan mainly imports electric bicycles in the EU, holding as much as 52% in this European market. In second place is Vietnam with a 21% share of imports, followed by China (13%) and Switzerland (6%).
