GNOME Switches to Adwaita Sans as Default Font

The codebase used to form the spring release of GNOME 48 has been updated to use the Adwaita Sans font by default. Since 2010, GNOME has used the Cantarell font, a change that was needed due to stagnant development and maintenance issues.

The new Adwaita Sans font is based on the Inter font, which was specifically designed for use in user interfaces and optimized to achieve high legibility of small and medium-sized characters (less than 12px) when displayed on computer screens. Unlike the Cantarell font, a large community has formed around the Inter project, continuing to develop the font, eliminating shortcomings, implementing new font features, and testing display quality for different languages and screen types.

GNOME Switches to Adwaita Sans as Default Font

Unlike Inter, Adwaita Sans has a stronger distinction between the uppercase "I" and lowercase "l". At the same time, Adwaita Sans by default continues to use a similar display of the letter "O" and the number "0" (to display the number 0 with a dot in the middle, you can set the "ss02" mode in the font-feature-settings property, supported in GTK).
