Google Chrome will block "mixed content" downloaded over HTTP

Developers at Google are committed to improving the security and privacy of Chrome browser users. The next step in this direction will be to change the security settings. A message appeared on the official developers blog, which states that soon web resources will be able to load page elements only via HTTPS, while loading via HTTP will be automatically blocked.

Google Chrome will block "mixed content" downloaded over HTTP

According to Google, up to 90% of the content viewed by Chrome users is currently downloaded over HTTPS. However, in many cases, the pages you view download insecure elements over HTTP, including images, audio, video, or "mixed content." The company believes that such content may pose a threat to users, so the Chrome browser will block its download.

Starting with Chrome 79, the web browser will block all mixed content, but innovations will be introduced gradually. This December, Chrome 79 will have a new setting that allows you to unblock "mixed content" on certain sites. In January 2020, Chrome 80 will arrive, which will automatically convert all mixed audio and video by downloading them over HTTPS. If these elements cannot be loaded over HTTPS, they will be blocked. In February 2020, Chrome 81 will be released, capable of automatically converting mixed images, as well as blocking them if they cannot load correctly.

When all the changes take effect, users will not have to think about which protocol is used to download certain elements on the web pages they view. The gradual introduction of changes will give developers time to make all "mixed content" downloadable over HTTPS.
