Google added features to branded maps to protect users from COVID-19

Restrictions imposed around the world as a result of the coronavirus pandemic are becoming softer due to the decline in the incidence rate. However, the risk of infection is still high. In order to keep users safe, Google has added many new features to the Maps app that, among other things, will help you avoid large crowds.

Google Maps will now show users a range of COVID-19 related reminders. The app will display alerts issued by local authorities when searching for public transit routes. Because the feature involves Google working with local authorities, it currently only works in Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Colombia, France, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, Spain, Thailand, the UK, and the US.

There will also be new alerts in the Maps app about COVID-19 checkpoints, such as when crossing state borders. There are a few more new features related to public transport. Following the introduction of overcrowding forecasts last year, now any user will also be able to share their experience in order to improve the accuracy of the forecasts. In addition, it will be possible to track crowds at transit stations, but it will be based on Google location history data, which is disabled by default in the Maps app.

And, finally, the application will tell you whether it is necessary to take a body temperature measurement during certain trips. New features are already available in Google Maps for iOS and Android.
