Google is experimenting with running Chromium OS on Android

At a closed event, Google demonstrated to its partners the FerroChrome project, within which a special build of the Chromium OS operating system has been prepared, designed to run in a virtual machine on devices running the Android platform. During the demo, the Chromium OS interface was displayed on a large screen connected to a Pixel 8 smartphone. It is assumed that the ability to run Chromium OS can be used to create a full-featured desktop environment that can be used when the smartphone is connected to a monitor, keyboard and mouse.

Starting with Android 13, the Android Virtualization Framework (AVF) was added to the platform, implemented on the basis of the KVM hypervisor and the crosvm toolkit, and allowing you to run virtual machines with other operating systems. Until now, Google has used AVF to create "microdroid" builds, which are used to isolate third-party system components. In late April, AVF documented the ability to run operating systems with a graphical user interface and announced support for creating Chromium OS guest systems.

The FerroChrome build is not yet publicly distributed, but Google has published instructions for building a guest system with Chromium OS and running it in the AVF virtual machine. Using these instructions, enthusiasts were able to reproduce the launch of Chromium OS on a Pixel 7 Pro smartphone with a connected keyboard and mouse.
