Google is experimenting with hiding add-on icons by default

Google company presented an experimental implementation of a new add-on menu that will provide users with more information about the permissions granted to each add-on. The essence of the change is that by default it is proposed to stop pinning add-on icons next to the address bar. In this case, a new menu will appear next to the address bar, indicated by a puzzle icon, which will list all available add-ons and their powers. After installing the add-on, the user will have to explicitly enable pinning the add-on icon to the panel, simultaneously evaluating the permissions granted to the add-on.

In order for the add-on not to be lost, an indicator with information about the new add-on is displayed immediately after installation. The new mode can be enabled using the "chrome://flags/#extensions-toolbar-menu" setting. If the experiment is considered successful, then the change
will be applied to all users in one of the next stable releases.

In the comments to the change, add-on developers mostly negatively perceived change, since in the vast majority of cases, the user, in addition to installing it, will not make any additional settings and the add-on will be hidden. In their opinion, the display of icons should be enabled by default as before, but the possibility of their detachment should be made more explicit.
