Alphabet's Google has warned the US administration that it risks jeopardizing the country's national security if it continues its policy of completely banning American firms from cooperating with Huawei Technologies, the Financial Times reported.
There is no doubt that Washington's sanctions will hurt Huawei in the short term, but industry experts say it could spur it, like other Chinese firms, to stand on its own. By developing more and more domestic technologies, they could damage the global dominance of American companies like Google in the longer term.
In particular, Google is concerned that it will not be allowed to update the Android operating system on Huawei smartphones, prompting the Chinese company to develop its own version of the software, the FT said, citing people briefed on Google's efforts to convince the Trump administration.
According to one FT source, the main argument is that Huawei will be forced to modify Android into a "hybrid" version that will be "at greater risk of being hacked, not least by China."
