Google is testing text-to-speech technology in Pixel smartphones

Online sources are reporting that Google has added an automated text-to-speech feature to the Phone app on Pixel devices. Due to this, users can literally one-touch transfer information about their location to medical, fire or police services without the need for speech.

The new function has a fairly simple principle of operation. When an emergency call is made, the Phone app displays three additional icons labeled Medical, Fire, and Police. After clicking on the desired button, the text-to-speech function is activated. This message, as well as the fact that the subscriber is using an automatic service, will be read to the operator of the corresponding service. The message will indicate what type of assistance the subscriber needs, as well as where he is located.

The company says that the new feature is intended for people in need of emergency assistance, but unable to communicate with the operator orally. This situation may arise due to injuries, any danger or speech impairment.

It is worth noting that this feature is an extension of the capabilities that appeared in Pixel smartphones back in 2017. This is about automatically displaying the location map on the dialing screen when calling for emergency assistance. The new text-to-speech system makes the process of communicating with emergency services easier, as a person does not need to read any information at all.

The announcement says the new feature will roll out to Pixel smartphones in the United States in the coming months. It is also possible that in the future the ability to convert text to speech will appear in devices based on Android.
