Google Introduces New Privacy Policies to Improve Chrome Extensions

At the moment, there are about 180 extensions in the Chrome online store. Some extensions hosted in the store collect user data without proper permissions. This will change soon as Google starts introducing new privacy policies for Chrome extensions. It is known that the rules announced by the company will come into force this autumn. If an extension does not comply with the new privacy requirements, it will be removed from the Chrome Web Store.

Google's message says that it's necessary to comply with the requirements, according to which extensions should request access only to the data that is necessary to implement the functionality. If more than one permission can be used to make the extension work, then developers should use the option that requires access to the least amount of information. With the entry into force of the new rules, this condition will become mandatory for absolutely all extensions of the Chrome Web Store.

Another change will affect the requirements for the processing of personal information. Developers of software products that process user communications and content provided will be required to post a separate privacy policy that describes how data is processed and stored.

The company believes that extensions must remain transparent in terms of how they handle user data. More details on the new privacy requirements are expected to be published at a later date.
