Google is shutting down its own Daydream VR platform

Such a move is unlikely to surprise people who follow the development of virtual reality technologies on mobile devices. Undoubtedly, Google Daydream has contributed to the increase in the popularity of VR, giving users the opportunity to get in touch with the virtual world. However, this was not enough, since the entire industry related to virtual reality on mobile devices is not in the best condition. Gradually, the development vector shifted towards better and more efficient VR technologies.

“We saw a lot of potential in smartphones with VR, which allow the mobile device to be used everywhere, providing users with an immersive experience. Over time, we have noticed clear limitations that prevent VR smartphones from becoming a viable long-term solution. While we no longer sell Daydream View or support the VR platform on new Pixel smartphones, the Daydream app and store will remain available to existing users," a Google spokesperson said.

Currently, Google believes that augmented reality has a high potential. The company continues to invest heavily in the development of Google Lens AR glasses, navigation in maps with augmented reality elements, and other projects in this direction.
