New York City Council votes to ban vaping

New York will become the largest city in the US to ban nicotine-free e-cigarettes. The City Council voted overwhelmingly (42–2) to ban flavored e-cigarettes and liquid vape flavors. New York Mayor Bill de Blasio is expected to sign the bill soon.

The move comes as vaping-related lung disease is on the rise in the US. The number of cases due to vaping has exceeded 2100, and 42 people have died, including 2 New Yorkers.

Back in September, the Trump administration announced about plans to ban flavored e-cigarettes, but federal officials have so far been slow to enact a ban. Amid the inaction of the federal government, state and local government officials have begun to fight the e-cigarette boom, also called the teen vaping epidemic.
