Government agencies in South Korea are planning to switch to Linux

Ministry of Interior and Security of South Korea intends to transfer computers in state institutions from Windows to Linux. Initially, it is planned to perform a test implementation on a limited number of computers, and if no significant compatibility and security issues are identified, the migration will be extended to other computers of government agencies. The cost of migrating to Linux and buying new PCs is estimated at $655 million.

The main motive for the migration is the desire to reduce costs due to the end of the Windows 7 baseline maintenance cycle in January 2020 and the need to purchase a new version of Windows or pay for the Windows 7 Extended Support Program. Also mentioned is the intention to move away from dependence on one operating system in the infrastructure of government institutions.
