The GLONASS constellation will be replenished with mini-satellites

After 2021, the Russian GLONASS navigation system is planned to be developed using small satellites. This was reported by the online publication RIA Novosti with reference to information received from sources in the rocket and space industry.

The GLONASS constellation will be replenished with mini-satellites

Currently, the GLONASS constellation includes 26 devices, of which 24 are used for their intended purpose. One more satellite is in orbital reserve and at the stage of flight testing.

However, it is reported that approximately two-thirds of the GLONASS orbital constellation are devices operating beyond the guaranteed periods of active existence. This means that a comprehensive system update will be required in the coming years.

β€œDue to the fact that the operation of the heavy Proton rockets is ending, the use of the Angara rockets has not yet begun, and the Soyuz rockets can launch into orbit only one Glonass-M or Glonass-K apparatus, it is accepted the decision to make small devices weighing up to 500 kilograms. In this case, Soyuz will be able to launch three spacecraft into orbit at once,” informed people said.

The new GLONASS mini-satellites will carry on board exclusively navigation equipment: they are not provided with additional equipment, say, for processing signals from the COSPAS-SARSAT rescue system. Due to this, the mass of mini-satellites will be reduced by two to three times compared to currently used devices.

It is also noted that the creation of new navigation satellites is provided for by the concept of the Federal Target Program β€œGLONASS” for 2021–2030.
