Do you look at article ratings before you read them? Theoretically, this should not affect your attitude to each individual post at all, but it does. Also, the author of the publication should not matter if the article is interesting, but it also influences our attitude towards the text even before we start reading.
Once on Habré, there were often comments “I didn’t look at the author before reading, but I guessed that it was
Shall we restore justice? Or will we prove bias? Today's detective story is a set of stories about 24 publications by different authors and on different topics, but we are interested in what actually happens to the texts after they are published.
About storytelling
Each story here is independent, doesn't really overlap with the others, and will come with its own conclusions. It's just a set of 24 little habra-lives. But whether the author of the publication sees the red inscription “wasted” depends on him.
All of them will help you figure out how Habr users actually read publications, rate them and comment.
Since it would be unfair to compare publications of different types (author's texts, news and translations), I will concentrate on those that appear most often and whose lifespan is very limited - news.
About collecting information
Every 5 minutes
Stored data
- publication date;
- author;
- name;
- Number of votes;
- the number of pluses;
- the number of minuses;
- overall rating;
- bookmarks;
- views;
- comments.
Each publication from the list was loaded no more than once per second.
It should be noted that in all data the point 0 is the next point in time after publication, in multiples of 5 minutes. The analysis is carried out for 24 hours - 289 points, including 0.
About color coding
In order not to indicate in each picture which color refers to what, I present the color scheme used. Of course, everyone could read the text carefully and everything would be clear (but after all, everyone only likes to look at pictures, like me).
About publications
1. That Habr is not Twitter (Saturday, December 14)
She appeared on Saturday morning December 14 at 09:50 UTC, lived for 10 hours, and last showed signs of life around 19:50 UTC of the same day. It has been read about 2 times, commented 100 times, bookmarked 9, and rated 1 times (↑19, ↓6, total: -13). Her name was "
What happened? The article from 1 paragraph was a note, the essence of which is clear from the title. Some function is now running somewhere.
Let's look at the dynamics of developments. The first minus boul was received after 1 hour, and after another 10 minutes the rating returned to zero with the addition of the first plus. 5 hours and 10 minutes after the publication, the rating for the first time exceeded zero, but in 40 minutes it returned back and then only fell.
Rice. 1. Publication statistics
In any case, the publication was hidden in drafts. Whether this was the action of the author or a UFO is unknown. However, users do not forget to remind the authors that Habr is not Twitter and the post here should contain details, preferably technical ones, and not just fit into 280 characters.
2. About a well-known social network (Saturday, December 14)
Published 4 minutes earlier than news #1, it didn't get much attention in 24 hours.
Rice. 2. Publication statistics
Perhaps readers are tired of Facebook with constant scandals and such news does not cause any reactions. Perhaps the point is in the post itself. The comments noted the lack of special novelty and the repetition of previously published information.
3. About the company that everyone criticizes (Saturday, December 14)
An hour later than the previous two, another publication was published
Rice. 3. Publication statistics
On the other hand, like the previous publication, it did not receive a single minus. We will remember this interesting fact for the future - news often receives only a few pluses and nothing more.
4. About what excited many (Sunday, December 15)
Immediately after posting at 06:00 UTC on Sunday morning, her name was "
As of the beginning of the action (3 hours after the appearance on Habré), the publication has collected 4 views, 800 comments, as well as ↑11 and ↓22. By the end of the action (after another 2 minutes), these values were 30, 6, ↑200, ↓17.
Rice. 4. Publication statistics
Within 24 hours, the number of views increased to 26, and comments to 500. An interesting fact is that a significant part of the comments were that the commentators learned about the blackout from a publication about the already completed promotion. The publication rating rose to +123 (↑64, ↓70).
Socially important and relevant publications always gain a significant audience.
5. About what should have calmed at least someone (Sunday, December 15)
At first, her name was so long that no one read it. But now it's called
Since this topic was in the top priorities of the week, the first comment on the publication appeared within 15 minutes, and after another 5 - the first ↑2 and 1 addition to bookmarks. An hour after publication, the post was viewed about 2 times and the rating rose to +000 (↑13, ↓15). As a result, like news #2, this one got a significant 4 views, as well as 31 comments, it was bookmarked 800 times and the rating rose to +84 (↑15, ↓62) per day.
Rice. 5. Publication statistics
By publishing something at the peak of popularity, you will undoubtedly find a wide audience. The main thing is not to blunder.
6. About privacy (Sunday, December 15)
One of the few Sunday publications was about privacy, and the essence is contained in its title - “
As it turned out, it took 1 hours and 000 minutes to collect a modest 3, and in just 25 hours the number of views did not exceed 24. Nevertheless, a small discussion of 4400 posts gathered in the comments. There were few people who wanted to express their opinion in the rating of the publication - the overall rating was +26 (↑8, ↓11).
Rice. 6. Publication statistics
The conclusion is that even the story that somewhere in the world a threat to the privacy of people is possible does not find much popularity on Habré on December Sunday.
7. About self-driving cars (Sunday, December 15)
The new development in the self-driving car camp also fell flat and was only read 3 times in 400 hours. Possibly the title
Achieving the first 1 views took exactly 000 hours, but the first comment criticizing the content appeared within 4 minutes after publication. Only one person bookmarked the post in 15 hours.
Rice. 7. Publication statistics
It is difficult to attract the interest of the reader with a topic that does not reveal almost any details of new developments.
8. About bugs and a very famous company (Monday, December 16)
The first on the list of news of no interest to anyone lately is the news about a bug from Apple called "
Rice. 8. Publication statistics
Probably, if this news was not written by the editor of Habr, the author would be very upset by such modest indicators. The post has never been commented or bookmarked. And although it was rated +7 (↑8, ↓1), this is a great example of a topic that does not fit the interests of the audience.
9. About how someone can still feel better (Monday, December 16)
Another publication on this topic appeared on Monday evening at 19:08 UTC. Like previous posts about what's happening with Nginx, this one garnered a significant audience and managed to pass the 1-view mark in less than 000 minutes. After 25 hours and 6 minutes, the number of views reached 10, despite the night for a significant part of Habr's audience, and exactly 10 hours after publication, the second ten were also defeated. As a result, the news was viewed 000 times in 9 hours.
Like other important social topics, this article was actively commented - the total number of comments was 130. On the other hand, the number of bookmarks was very modest - 11. The first day ended with an overall rating of +57 (↑59, ↓2).
During the first day, the title of the publication was also supplemented. If at first it was
Rice. 9. Publication statistics
The main thing is to be in time before the fall in the popularity of the topic.
10. About the supplier of the most popular cemetery (Monday, December 16)
Usually publications containing the words "Google" and "closes“, collect a lot of views and comments. That's what happened with the post.
But there were few who wanted to comment on the publication - 5 comments per day. The post also boasts a good rating of +33 (↑33, ↓0) and 6 bookmarks.
Rice. 10. Publication statistics
Conclusion: Google is a really popular word, and any mention of a corporation closing something is of interest.
11. About an important letter (Tuesday, December 17)
News about
Unlike previous publications about Rambler and Nginx, this one quickly sank in the number of new views, which affected other indicators as well.
Rice. 11. Publication statistics
It seems that too many publications on one topic for several days are not easy for readers of Habr to digest.
12. About the next title (Tuesday, December 17)
Successes and innovations in the publication
Users did not deny themselves the pleasure when commenting - 90. But only 5 people wished to save the publication for later in bookmarks. And although the ratio of pluses and minuses given to the post is not ideal, the overall rating of +27 (↑33, ↓6) is not so bad.
Rice. 12. Publication statistics
Conclusion, Habr users sometimes need to be distracted by criticism of something new.
13. About what no one will read (Tuesday, December 17)
Unlike 12 publications earlier, this news is in the corporate blog. Perhaps this is the reason for the low popularity of the article "
Be that as it may, in 24 hours the publication could not even reach 1 views and ended the first day with a modest 000 reads. The number of comments is quite commensurate - there are only 960 of them. But 2 votes were given for the rating of the publication. As a result, the overall rating was +17 (↑7, ↓12).
Rice. 13. Publication statistics
Perhaps users have a biased attitude towards publications from corporate blogs. On the other hand, to see the hubs in which the post is published, and at the same time not read it, you need to go to a separate news page. The news block on the first page of Habr does not show this information. So something went wrong with the header.
The publication time is also quite normal - 14:14 UTC.
14. About What Will Happen Someday (Wednesday, December 18)
Despite the seemingly likely social importance of this publication for a significant part of Habr's audience, the post
The first 1 views were submitted in 000 hours, which can be explained by the nighttime publication time (4.5:00 UTC), however, the article was not particularly popular in the morning either. As a result, the first day ended with 05 views.
But there were a lot of comments - 88. And although users actively discussed the issue, they were in no hurry to evaluate the publication. As a result, a day on Habré brought her a modest rating of +14 (↑14, ↓0).
Rice. 14. Publication statistics
Social topics gather a very unstable audience. Sometimes the number of views can go off scale, and sometimes not reach even the standard indicators. Or is it just that Habra-users are not optimists?
15. About the consequences (Wednesday, December 18)
Although for the next publication the text was not required at all, since
The news was published at 8:28 UTC, which allowed the number of views to grow quite quickly. In less than 25 minutes, this post got 1 views, 000 upvotes and 6 downvote. But the first comment appeared as much as 1 minutes later. Like previous publications on this topic, it easily reached the mark of 45 after 10 hours, but stopped at 000 views in a day.
The total number of comments in the first 24 hours was 167, but the user votes are noticeably lower than in earlier publications. With an overall rating of +40 (↑41, ↓1), such a publication could have received 3 rubles in the Habr PPA if it had not been written by an editor.
Rice. 15. Publication statistics
This topic was still not far from the peak of popularity.
16. About serious vulnerabilities (Wednesday, December 18)
Despite the important topic of closed vulnerabilities in Git, the publication
The timing of publication can hardly be blamed for its unpopularity. The appearance at 13:23 UTC is quite conducive to a quick gain in views.
The results of the users' voting are also very modest - the overall rating was +15 (↑15, ↓0), but no one left a comment.
Rice. 16. Publication statistics
Perhaps just all Habr users knew about this news before?
17. About piracy (Wednesday, December 18)
The fact that it would turn out to be very popular on Habré could easily be predicted. Surprisingly or not, the most popular 19-hour post on our list is about piracy and blocking. News published at 34:XNUMX UTC «
The same article is also the leader in terms of the number of additions to bookmarks - 26 per day of stay on Habré. There were also a lot of comments - 109. But the overall rating stopped at +36 (↑39, ↓3).
Rice. 17. Publication statistics
Blocking and discussion of ways to bypass them in the comments were, are and will probably be popular on Habré. Does everyone watch series?
18. About the next marketing nonsense (Wednesday, December 18)
New from JBL in the publication
As a result, the first 24 hours ended for this post with a modest rating of +8 (↑10, ↓2), 4 views, and 200 bookmarks and 3 comments.
Rice. 18. Publication statistics
Perhaps every Habr user simply already has better headphones.
19. Information leak (Thursday, December 19)
News published at 10:10 UTC «
In just 24 hours, 2 views, 100 bookmarking and 1 comments were collected. The overall rating at the end of the day was +2 (↑12, ↓12). At the same time, the mark of 0 views was reached in 2 hours and 000 minutes, but then practically nothing happened.
Rice. 19. Publication statistics
It seems that information leaks have become so commonplace that no one is interested in them anymore.
20. About isolation (Thursday, December 19)
The publication about the exercises to isolate the Russian segment of the Internet was doomed to many views. However, it failed. And although "
The publication became the record holder for the time of receiving the first minus in our selection. While there was a noticeable amount of upvotes in 24 hours, the overall rating of +17 (↑22, ↓5) isn't outstanding.
But there was no end to commentators. A total of 85 comments were collected. Also, the post has been bookmarked 7 times.
Rice. 20. Publication statistics
Socially important topics always gather a wide audience (especially when they are not published 10 posts a week).
21. About the next breakthrough in the field of batteries (Thursday, December 19)
Remember, after all, that news about brand new batteries appears several times every year? Because the results of the publication "
Total 4 views, 000 bookmark and 1 comments. The overall rating for the day is very modest and equal to +12 (↑9, ↓14).
Rice. 21. Publication statistics
Batteries are always tricky. So many new types of them have already been promised, and promises - every year at least. Therefore, reader skepticism is highly expected.
22. Time Travel (Friday, December 20)
A small scandal erupted this week around SpaceX. This is the post about him.
And although usually all notes about the creations of Elon Musk collect a significant number of views, this time it happened differently. In just 24 hours, the article was viewed 6 times. And almost no one wanted to participate in the discussion. A total of 700 comments were collected. In addition, the overall rating of the publication reached only +8 (↑12, ↓14), which is also quite low.
Rice. 22. Publication statistics
Maybe it's just that Habr-users are already preparing for the holidays with might and main and do not read Habr? Or just Elon Musk has ceased to be so popular.
23. About some wallet (Friday, December 20)
The second of 24 posts on the corporate blog is titled "
The discussion of the publication reached 53 comments, and the note itself was bookmarked 42 times. At the same time, the first 3 additions occurred in the first 5 minutes, even before the publication of the first comment.
With 8 views, as well as a +000 (↑40, ↓46) rating for the first day, we can assume that this is one of the few corporate news that has reached a high bar.
Rice. 23. Publication statistics
So, companies, just try to write more interesting and useful. After all, users rate text, not just your logo.
24. About the holiday (Friday, December 20)
The latest by date of publication in our list is news about something tasty. And although the title to it could be better than "
For the first day on Habré, the post was viewed 3 times. Also, 200 comments were left, and the news was bookmarked twice. The overall rating based on the result of 9 hours was +24 (↑10, ↓10).
Rice. 24. Publication statistics
This news is a good example that a publication that is absolutely not related to IT may be of interest to the Habr community.
Who got the most views
Probably everyone is wondering who was able to collect the most views in our random selection. As you may have noticed when visiting Habr this week, there are actually not so many authors of publications. That is why I chose not so much popular or highly rated news as different authors.

About what to do with it all
As usual, everyone must find the answer to this question for himself.
An attentive news reader should note that sometimes good news publications appear. They can be either from one of the editors, or from companies or just users. And although it is commonly believed that editors work for money, and therefore write quickly and poorly, this is not always true. Or maybe it’s true, but it’s just that the topic of the publication is too important to be distracted by shortcomings in the text.
An attentive news writer might notice that sometimes even useful publications do not attract the attention they deserve. Sometimes a topic that seems important to everyone turns out to be of no interest to anyone. And novelties in any field are met not so much with delight as with bewilderment. And of course, the scandals are already quite tired of everyone.
But the intrigues and investigations continue! Do not forget, sometimes what is happening around is much more interesting than it seems at first glance.
