Hackers stole the data of the population of an entire country

Security problems in social networks and other databases have been, are and, unfortunately, will be. Banks, hotels, government facilities and so on are at risk. But it seems that this time the situation has really worsened.

Hackers stole the data of the population of an entire country

Bulgarian Commission for Personal Data Protection сообщаСтthat hackers broke into the database of the tax office and stole the information of 5 million people. The figure is not so big, but it is the population of the country, which actually has about 7 million citizens. That is, the information of the whole state was in the public domain.

At the same time, it is noted that this is not the first attempt to attack Bulgarian networks. In 2018, the government website was attacked in a similar way, although the perpetrators were not found then. At the same time, Desislava Krusteva, a Bulgarian privacy and data protection lawyer, said that this did not require much effort from hackers.

At the same time, CNN reports the arrest of a 20-year-old suspect, who had their smartphones, computers and external drives confiscated. He faces up to 8 years in prison if the fact of involvement in the burglary is proven. There were no comments from the tax authorities yet.

The very fact that digital security of government data is being neglected indicates that many governments are simply not aware of the potential risks associated with this. Perhaps the case in Bulgaria will improve the security of information in principle.
