Harry Potter: Wizards Unite accidentally helped raise $500 thousand for a game about dragons

A small crowdfunding game became a huge success on Kickstarter thanks to the magic of Harry Potter and Google. Beawesome Games has launched a modest fundraising campaign for Day of Dragons on September 2. She asked for $12 thousand and received many times more.

“Have you ever thought it would be cool to play as a dragon? How about online with other players who are also dragons? - says the game's campaign page. -Have you ever thought that it would be cool to breathe fire, fly, survive as a dragon? Welcome to Day of Dragons."

The campaign raised $48 in the first 1300 hours, and then interest began to die down. But an amazing coincidence happened: soon Niantic launched the “Day of Dragons” event in Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Many people started searching for this phrase on Google, and the Day of Dragons Kickstarter page was the top search result.

As analyst Thomas Bidaux noted, on September 7 - the day of the Niantic event - the game Day of Dragons raised $13 thousand on Kickstarter, which is more than the amount that the developers hoped to receive in a month. In total, they received $533 thousand in donations.

Of course, Beawesome Games was pleased with the situation, although it did not publicly thank Harry Potter: Wizards Unite for its help.

“Thank you all so much for your amazing support of our game. Wow,” wrote Day of Dragons lead developer Jonathan Jao Slabaugh. - 500 thousand dollars?? This is incredible. We only asked for $12 thousand! We never asked for this! You are all so incredibly generous. Thanks a lot".

“I even thought that asking $12 thousand was too much, but that’s what I need to make three new dragons to replace the current three, each of which was made by a different artist. This is our first game, we never thought there were so many people who shared our vision, our passion for a game like this,” he continued. — I didn’t start this project to make money, I started it because it was what I always wanted to do. After my dad passed away from cancer on Christmas Day 2016, I decided to pursue my childhood dream of creating a video game. Many of my friends and family thought I was wasting my time, I was working 10-16 hours every day learning the engine and programming without getting paid for it. But I was determined to get it playable and release it on Steam in November in Early Access, and then let gamers decide whether it was a waste of time or not."
