HashiCorp has temporarily suspended accepting changes from the community in the Terraform project

HashiCorp explained why they recently added a note to the Terraform open configuration management platform repository to temporarily suspend community reviews and pull requests. The note was seen by some as a crisis in Terraform's open development model.

The Terraform developers were quick to reassure the community and stated that the added note was misunderstood and was only added to explain the reduced activity in parsing changes from the community due to a lack of staff. It is noted that after the first stable release of Terraform 1.0 published in the summer, there has been an explosive growth in the popularity of the platform, for which HashiCorp was not ready.

Due to the growing popularity of the platform and the increase in the number of commercial customers, the company is experiencing a large shortage of staff and the existing staff has been redeployed to solve primary tasks and provide product support. The suspension of accepting changes from the community is called a forced temporary measure - the growth in popularity has also led to an increase in the number of incoming changes from the community that the existing HashiCorp staff does not have time to review. Processing of changes for other HashiCorp products, as well as for providers with the implementation of additional resource types for Terraform, continued without changes.

Currently, the recruitment process for new engineers is underway and staffing problems are planned to be resolved in a few weeks, after which the acceptance of pull requests from the community will be established. HashiCorp currently has over a hundred unfilled engineering positions on its job listing.
