Hinterland is actively developing The Long Dark franchise: the second part is likely to be released

Hinterland studio director Raphael van Lierop wants to release a sequel to The Long Dark, which currently sells over 3,3 million copies.

Speaking at the Reboot Development Red conference, van Lierop discussed where the series could go in the future.

“We can now state that Long Dark is a fairly well-established intellectual property,” said van Lierop. “She has a large community that seems to enjoy what we do. We will release the promised five episodes, we will continue to update our sandbox. […] There is a good chance that The Long Dark 2 will be released at some point. My feeling is that where we are in the industry right now, and given the size of the studio, we should be brave enough to take a big step forward again. If we launched The Long Dark today, it wouldn't be as successful. The next iteration of The Long Dark should be an order of magnitude more impressive than what we've done."

Raphael van Lierop also said an interesting thing: he doesn't consider The Long Dark to be a "winter" franchise. The director of Hinterland Studio believes that the potential series has more to tell beyond surviving the cold. "There's a lot more to tell in The Long Dark... so we'll have a new game at some point," he shared. And there will be a potential addition, a different type of experience within the framework of intellectual property. The Long Dark is more than what you see now."

Hinterland Studio is currently working on two new projects. As van Lierop said, we won't hear about them until a few years from now. Raphael himself is currently writing a film based on The Long Dark. The studio also hopes to help other independent developers in the publishing space, with the intention of "taking on a couple of projects as a publisher and incubator."

The Long Dark is available on PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4.
