HP discontinued LaserJet printers that did not work without an Internet connection

All HP LaserJet "e-series" printers have been discontinued and HP+ subscription is now optional. The company has phased out printers that require a constant Internet connection and a mandatory subscription after numerous customer complaints about problems associated with these conditions.

An HP+ subscription includes a number of benefits, such as cloud printing and an additional year of warranty, but requires the printer to be always connected to the Internet and use only original HP inks and cartridges, which excludes the possibility of using alternative consumables from third-party manufacturers. Many consumers negatively perceived such restrictions for budget printer models, сообщает Tom's Hardware resource.

According to information DruckerChannel, production cessation will affect only those HP LaserJet models that have the letter “e” in their names. For example, the HP Laserjet M110w printer will not be affected by this decision, while the HP LaserJet M110we and M209dwe, which are cheaper alternatives that require internet connectivity, will no longer be manufactured or sold by HP.

An HP spokesperson said the company recognizes that some customers in managed office IT environments may not be able to meet the cloud connectivity requirements for HP+. To support printing in all office environments, HP will no longer offer LaserJet series products with HP+. The company plans to keep Print Anywhere and Smart Security available only on select HP LaserJet devices.

It also announced plans to stop promoting the Instant Ink toner subscription service to new customers by the end of the year. However, existing Instant Ink subscribers will not be affected by these changes. Experts suggest that the decision to discontinue the e-series printers and the Instant Ink service is due precisely to the negative reaction of users to the restrictions and confusion between various HP services.
