Huawei Harmony: another possible name for the Chinese company's OS

The fact that the Chinese company Huawei is developing its own operating system was announced in March this year. Then it was said that this was a forced step, and Huawei intends to use its OS only if it has to completely abandon Android and Windows. Despite the fact that in late June, US President Donald Trump (Donald Trump) spoke about easing sanctions against Huawei, many restrictions remain in place.

Against this background, the Chinese telecommunications giant continues to actively develop its own operating system. Representatives of the company say that the Huawei operating system is much faster than Android and macOS. In addition, it can be used not only in smartphones, but also in tablets, computers, laptops, wearable gadgets, etc. Chinese users will be able to evaluate the new OS this year, and its global launch may take place in the first quarter of 2020.

In June 2019, Huawei registered several names for its upcoming OS. It is assumed that in the global market the platform may be called Ark OS, while in China itself the name HongMeng OS will be used.

Now it became known that on July 12, Huawei registered the Harmony trademark. The corresponding application was submitted by the company to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). The description states that the trademark is registered in the categories: mobile operating systems, computer operating systems, and downloadable operating system programs. The trademark application was filed by the German company Forrester, which has acted on behalf of Huawei Technologies on numerous occasions in the past.

From the very beginning, representatives of Huawei have said that the company does not plan to launch its own operating system until it can use Android and Windows. Against the backdrop of a protracted confrontation with the US authorities, the launch of its own operating system will look like a justified step. It is possible that if the sanctions are lifted, Huawei will postpone the launch of its operating system indefinitely.
