The new product is manufactured using 7nm technology at the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC).

The chip contains eight processing cores in a "1+3+4" configuration. These are one ARM Cortex-A76 core clocked at 2,58 GHz, three ARM Cortex-A76 cores clocked at 2,4 GHz, and four ARM Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1,84 GHz.

The integrated Mali-G77 GPU is responsible for graphics processing. In addition, the solution includes a dual-core NPU AI block, which is responsible for accelerating the execution of operations related to artificial intelligence.

An important component of the novelty is a cellular modem that provides support for fifth-generation mobile networks (5G). The data transfer rate theoretically can reach 1277 Mbps towards the subscriber and 173 Mbps towards the base station. 5G networks with non-autonomous (NSA) and autonomous (SA) architectures are supported. In addition, it provides the ability to work in networks of all previous generations - 2G, 3G and 4G.

The first smartphone built on the Hisilicon Kirin 985 platform was the Honor 30 Standard Edition.
