Although Huawei is currently under strong pressure from the United States, the telecommunications equipment maker continues to expand. Network sources report that the Chinese vendor plans to build a research and development center for the development of chips near Cambridge. The main activity of the center will be the development of chips for broadband networks.

The new center will be erected on the site of an abandoned factory of the stationery company Spicers, which was built in 1796. The plant is being refurbished and the more than 220 hectares of land it sits on will be bought for Β£57,5m. Local residents have been told the plant will be operational in 2021, creating 400 jobs. The Chinese company announced that it could further finance the construction of medical centers and other urban infrastructure facilities that local residents need.
